The government’s focus on dementia is a positive step forward; but more needs to be done to improve the quality of post diagnostic care for families living with dementia.


A recent report of our Admiral Nursing Direct helpline found that 80 per cent of calls included discussions about the difficulties the family carer was experiencing on a daily basis with the person with dementia; and nearly a third of calls on the negative impact caring was having on their personal well-being, including frustration, distress and exhaustion.

In more than three-quarters of the calls, our Admiral Nurses – expert dementia nurses – gave advice where a carer wasn’t getting adequate support locally. These family carers were informed how to: navigate the health and social care systems, adapt their living arrangements, deliver personal care, get a diagnosis of dementia, ensure the safety of themselves and their family member, address problems with eating and drinking, and improve communication and relationships.
