Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK, and doctors are urging people to get tested if they suspect something is wrong.
A bowel cancer expert at LetsGetChecked says people with symptoms don’t visit their GP because they’re too embarrassed to talk about their bowel movements.
But nearly 42,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year and it’s the UK’s second biggest cancer killer, so getting tested is vital.
“Don’t be embarrassed. Checking your symptoms can save your life” says Dr Dominic Rowley.
Because many find it embarrassing to see their GP, self-testing kits have become a huge help in diagnosing bowel cancer.
“There’s been a big drive in self-testing kits that people can use in the privacy of their own homes. It takes away that embarrassment factor” says Dr Rowley.
Early detection is so important because bowel cancer is most treatable in the early stages. If diagnosed late, the survival rate is much lower.
That’s why taking action and getting tested if you have symptoms can make a huge difference towards early diagnosis.
Put simply, Dr Rowley says: “It could save your life.”
Self-testing kits are easy to use and leading provider,LetsGetChecked, offers a test for just £49, with results processed in the same labs as hospitals and primary care providers.
To encourage more people to get tested, they’re currently offering 20% off their bowel cancer test, with code TEST20.
Known as a Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), it detects hidden blood in the stool, an early symptom of bowel cancer.
“If you have a change in bowel habits, or if you experience any bleeding — even if you think it’s just a haemorrhoid, and it doesn’t go away — just get tested. It could save your life” urges Dr Rowley.
LetsGetChecked’s FIT test is the first step in finding out if you could have bowel cancer. If blood is found, you’ll need a colonoscopy to determine if you definitely have bowel cancer.
As soon as you receive your test kit, all you do is collect your sample and return it on the same day in the pre-paid envelope. You’ll get your results in as a little as two days on your personalised online dashboard.
What’s even better is that a member of LetsGetChecked’s clinical team will give you a call to discuss your results, and offer advice on lifestyle changes or treatment options.
