When living with a lung condition, summer isn’t always an easy season. From pollen to pollution, these triggers bring their challenges, but with the right steps, you can breathe easier and live well.
As a GP and Clinical Lead at Asthma + Lung UK, I know how the warmer months can offer a real boost to people with lung conditions. Cold air and winter bugs can make life tough, so spring and summer often come as a welcome relief. But the season isn’t without its challenges, pollen, air pollution and even exercise can still affect how you breathe.
Know your triggers
Hay fever is a big one. According to Asthma + Lung UK’s annual lung survey, around 50% of people with asthma and a quarter of those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) find pollen worsens their symptoms. That’s because it can inflame the airways and cause a build-up of mucus, leading to coughing, wheezing or breathlessness.
If this sounds familiar, I recommend starting antihistamines two to four weeks before your symptoms usually begin and using a steroid nasal spray regularly. Don’t forget to keep your reliever inhaler close, and take your inhaler medication as prescribed.
Track the seasons
Pollen levels shift throughout the seasons: tree pollen starts in April; grass pollen peaks in June and July; and weed pollen can last into mid-August. I always advise checking daily pollen and pollution levels before heading out. Warm days and busy roads can combine to create poor air quality, which can worsen your symptoms. When possible, head out early and steer clear of main roads.
Being active is one of the
best things you can do.
Keep moving
Being active is one of the best things you can do. It builds strength in the muscles around your lungs, which helps reduce breathlessness. I understand people may feel anxious about getting out of breath, but gentle, regular movement helps. If pollution or pollen is high, indoor exercise or online videos can offer a safe alternative.
Make the most of summer
With the right steps, summer doesn’t have to hold you back. From managing your symptoms to building confidence, it’s a great time to take control of your lung health. Your best summer starts with better breathing. Get in touch with your GP surgery early if your symptoms are increasing.
