Everyone in the UK should receive the best healthcare possible. However, the NHS is facing immense challenges — growing winter pressures, stretched resources and squeezed budgets while the aftermath of the pandemic remains stark.

Charities providing NHS support

At NHS Charities Together, we know that patient needs are changing. The population is growing and people are living longer, often with more or multiple long-term conditions, and we depend more on technology.

Charities exist across most of the public sector to add value to stretched public services, and the NHS is no different. NHS charities have existed since before the NHS began, and many other national charities provide extra support for healthcare.

Funding local services and projects

NHS charities work strategically with their Trusts to provide extra support. Together, we give an extra £1 million a day to the NHS. Funding can support projects ranging from mental health initiatives for an exhausted workforce to health services innovations as well as training and equipment for community first responder volunteers who attend to emergencies. We continue to work together as a sector and are striving to improve workforce wellbeing, transform patient experiences and outcomes and help people live well in communities.

Sector collaboration for enhanced healthcare

Over the last four years, NHS Charities Together has funded hundreds of community projects through NHS charities that have made a difference to the health and wellbeing of people across the country and taken pressure off stretched NHS services.

We have created hundreds of partnership programmes focusing on the social determinants of health and reducing health inequalities. This has been made possible through generous donations and by funding volunteers across the country.

Ensuring people receive the care and support we all deserve in a time of immense challenge requires various sectors working together. For the NHS to truly thrive, the Government, local authorities and the voluntary sector must work with the amazing network of NHS charities to drive change and ensure that our healthcare system is the best it can be.
